The second annual SASSY Awards brought out the best in youth last Friday night at Bell Performing Arts Centre in Surrey.
SASSY, which stands for Service Above Self Surrey Youth Awards, recognized six individuals aged 16 to 21 who have made an impact in the community. The event drew a greater attendance than last year and featured live performances by pop singer Victoria Duffield, the Freshh hip-hop dance crew and a pre-show event with local rocker Tommy Alto.
"We had six outstanding SASSY Award winners," said Bill Brooks, event chair and producer of the SASSY Awards. "We had great engagement by the youth in the audience to the award winners and the entertainment."
The award winners and categories included Andrew Pham (Performing & Visual Arts), Cameron Frost (Athletic/Sportsman), Nury Lee (Humanitarian), Kiran Mann (Youth Leadership), Raymon Gulati (Against the Odds) and Shantelle Medel (Community Service).
The event also featured an inspiring speech by MuchMusic VJ Sarah Taylor, who was the keynote speaker.
Brooks added that groups like the Surrey Fire Fighters Association and the City of Surrey are interested in helping out with next year's event.
"This week, we start planning 2013 with a partnership," he said. "The Surrey school district is going to become more involved with us.
"We got the momentum going."
