Learn With a Friend program: "Want to make a difference in someone's life? Volunteer as a tutor with Surrey Libraries' Learn with a Friend program, which offers free, one-to-one tutoring for adult learners (ages 19+). Learners are paired with a tutor and receive individualized tutoring specific to their needs and interests. Tutor and learner meet for approximately one to three hours per week in a public space, such as a library." Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC: Do you enjoy interacting with preschool-age children in a social/recreational "play-school" setting? Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC seeks volunteers to help in its Family Resource Centres in North Delta and Ladner. Morning and afternoon shifts are available, Monday to Friday. Big Sisters of BC-Lower Mainland is looking for women, age 19 or older, to volunteer as Big Sister mentors. The organization provides Little Sisters with a mentor who is there to listen to her, have fun with her, and be a supportive friend.

Investors Group Walk for Memories, in support of the Alzheimer Society of B.C., on Jan. 27 in 23 communities in B.C., including Eaglequest golf course (site of regional event for Surrey, White Rock and Delta). North Delta Newcomers and Friends: "Ladies in North Delta, are you new to the area or would just like to meet some new friends? CFUW (Canadian Federation of University Women) North Delta/Surrey is a club open to all women graduates, students and associates who support the mission and ideals of CFUW, and represent many countries. The club provides annual scholarships and bursaries to deserving female graduates who are going on to university. Monthly meetings (September to June).

Ubuntu Ogogo: "Compassionate grandmothers" group meets on second Wednesday of month at Fleetwood Villa, 16028 83rd Ave., from 9: 30 a.m. to noon. Group works to raise funds to assist grandmothers of sub-Saharan Africa who are supporting their grandchildren due to AIDS/HIV pandemic there. Info: 778-565-3555, bwarren567@shaw.ca.

PROGRAMS

One-to-one tutoring for children (age six to 14) who struggle with reading, comprehension, spelling or writing is offered by Learning Disabilities Association. "This specialized program is supervised by experienced, certified teachers." Available from Feb. 4 to May 23, between 4 and 8 p.m. and students attend twice a week for one-hour sessions at Janice Churchill Elementary, 8226 146 St., Surrey, and Douglas Park School, 5409 - 206 St., Langley.
