And the winner is Gary E. Jones - although, Surrey Deputy Fire Chief John Caviglia had it pretty much sussed out, too.

Using our Twitter and Facebook pages, we asked readers if they knew what a green helmet was doing hanging from a BC Hydro wire at the intersection of 152nd Street and 104th Avenue in Guildford.

Jones, a financial security advisor, sent us an email to say it would have belonged to a "greenhorn" Hydro worker who hung it there during his last job before graduating from a green to white helmet.

Caviglia echoed that.

"We believe it's a lineman helmet that's attached on the primary wire," Caviglia said. "It's definitely not a firefighter's helmet."

Simi Heer, a spokeswoman for BC Hydro, said she "heard through the grapevine" that it's tradition for some apprentices to hang up their green helmets when they become whitehelmeted journeymen.

It's not official Hydro policy.
