T his time of year is definitely shopping season. I know, we are a multicultural society and not everyone celebrates Christmas. Still, it is the season. So we gear up with comfortable shoes, a bottle of water and giant shopping bags, and hit the malls. We have a list. Oh and then there is the disappointment when the things on our list are already sold out.
This happens for Christmas events as well. Sorry to tell you the Vancouver Welsh Men's Choir's Sounds of Christmas concert on Dec. 11 at Surrey Arts Centre is sold out. The folks at the arts centre are most apologetic (but really, you should have gotten tickets sooner) and invite you to visit www.surrey.ca to see other events taking place at the venue in December. Check out my list as well.
The Handel Society of Music presents "The Messiah" by G.F. Handel on Saturday, Dec. 15 at Good Shepherd Church, 2250 150th St., Surrey, and again Friday, Dec. 21 at Cornerstone Christian Reformed Church, 9800 McNaught Rd., Chilliwack. This is always a magnificent musical treat, featuring Chilliwack Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. Soloists include Raphael Wagner, Sonya Sweeney, Christopher Simmons and Angus Bell - gee, some of my favorite singers. For tickets (adults $20, seniors/students $15), call 604-585-9102 or visit handelsociety.ca, or check out the group's Facebook page.
You could take a trip to New Westminster and catch some very good Surrey actors in the Norm Foster Christmas comedy, Dear Santa. Santa and his happy (?) elves struggle to overcome a supply shortage at the North Pole. See, you aren't the only one with a long list and short supply. Surrey's Greg Dersken stars as Algernon, Santa's efficient Chief of Staff, who has the challenge of creating order out of the chaos that ensues when Christmas Eve takes a lot of unexpected turns.
Also from Surrey are actors Rob Larsen, as Skiffle, and Amy Goheen, as Fiddlesticks, the elves who have to do the leg work while Algernon gives the orders. The lively family comedy introduces a host of other quirky characters - all of whom are essential to get Santa ready for his Christmas Eve tour. This is a large cast, and not all are from Surrey. I think all viewers, from adults to the youngest boy or girl, might find this show delightfully entertaining. Directed by Jacqollyne Keath, Dear Santa runs from Dec. 6 to 23 at Bernie Legge Theatre in Queens Park, New Westminster. Tickets are $13/$15; reservations at 604 521-0412 or book online, reservations@ vagabondplayers.ca.
This is just a reminder for you about the next White Rock Chamber Music program. I know you already have it on your list. The Dec. 8 concert is Dylan Thomas's famous "A Child's Christmas in Wales" - an intimate evening of story and song arranged by Ainsley Reid and performed and narrated by the young VanDeca troupe of singers, dancers and instrumentalists. The event takes place at 7: 30 p.m. this Saturday, at Crescent Gardens Retirement Residence, 1222 King George Blvd. (next to Pacific Inn Hotel.) Everyone is welcome, admission $5.
