The 2012 edition of Surrey High School Drama Festival hits the boards this week at Kwantlen Park Secondary.

The school's theatre, at 10441 132nd St., Surrey, plays host to the event on Thursday, Jan. 12, from 5: 30 to 10 p.m.

Drama and theatre students from around Surrey participate in the festival - more than 100 students from high schools. One-act plays are staged.

"Awards are given at the end of the evening," explained Craig Wrotniak, vice-president of Surrey Drama Teachers' Association. "The outstanding production goes on to represent the Surrey zone at the Provincial High School Drama Festival at Douglas College in early May."

This year, Wrotniak added, the Surrey district is excited to have Sears as a sponsor, providing awards for outstanding achievement by students and productions.

"We are also happy to have professional director, acting professor and adjudicator Scott Swan as our festival adjudicator, and Rob Dugan as our technical director."

The festival will involve secondary students from Kwantlen Park, Semiahmoo, Clayton Heights, Enver Creek and North Surrey schools.

Tickets at the door are $5 for adults and $2 for students. The doors of the theatre will open at 5: 15 p.m.
