Students use talent - plenty of it - to combat cancer
Local celebrities support tonight's talent show, which aims to raise $10K

A group of North Delta Secondary Grade 12 students is bringing together a melting pot of local talent to raise $10,000 for cancer research - and everyone is invited.
Founded by Grade 12 student Garneet Gill two years ago, the initiative, called Mission Daffodil, was put together following her loss of a loved one to cancer.
While the group was able to put on a talent show in the first year, they were unable to do so in the second, due to job action by teachers.
Now, Gill and company are back for one more push before they all graduate.
"Our first year we raised about $6,000," said Gill. "This year we decided to make it bigger because it's our final year at ND, so we're hoping to raise around $10,000."
The talent show, called North Delta's Got Talent, will feature 13 acts from students and a handful of acts by local celebrities, including Kuba Oms, Craig Smart and Troy Samson.
Other public figures, such as radio personality Kid Carson, will also be on hand to support the show.
"The local celebrities are coming in to motivate the kids and give them positive feedback," said Gill, noting that the hope is for kids to draw inspiration from the local acts.
Funds raised at the show will be going to the Canadian Cancer Society and a small portion will also be going to North Delta Secondary's fitness club.
However, with Gill and her partners set to graduate next spring, she's already making efforts to keep the show alive for years to come.
"This year we were doing something a little different and we're bringing in Grade 11 students to help out with everything," she said.
"The plan is so after we graduate there's still somebody to carry on the next year and we can still have a show at ND that raises money for cancer. So we've found replacements for each of us."
North Delta's Got Talent takes place tonight (Nov. 29) at North Delta Secondary (11447 82nd Ave.).
Tickets for the event are $15 at the door or $10 in advance, and can purchased at the school's office during the day. The show starts at 7 p.m.
