SURREY - A two-year-old Newton girl is going to be OK after tumbling out of a third-storey apartment window on Saturday afternoon.

"Fortunately, there were no broken bones or injury," Surrey RCMP spokesman Curtis Harling said.

The incident happened at 2:15 p.m., in the 12100-block of 75A Avenue.

Police said the girl's mom was busy with some food on the stove while her daughter climbed up some furniture that had been piled near a window.

When the mother returned, she found the screen had been pushed out. The toddler fell 25 feet and landed in a bush. Paramedics rushed the girl to Royal Columbian Hospital, where she was kept under observation for 24 hours.

Children falling from windows is a regular occurrence in Surrey. A little more than a week ago, a four-year-old boy fell out of a second-storey window at an apartment in Whalley, hitting a metal hydro meter on the way down. Remarkably, he wasn't seriously injured.

Last September, a 13-month-old boy fell 10 feet from the window of a duplex in Newton, breaking his leg and fracturing his skull.

Last summer, a two-year-old boy fell out of the third-floor window in South Surrey and a two-year-old girl fell from the second-storey window of a townhouse in Sullivan.

Surrey RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger noted that window screens only provide an illusion of security.
