Steven Spielberg has been named to head the jury at the 66th Cannes film festival.
The American director and producer is a regular at Cannes — the first film he made for theatres, Sugarland Express, won the best screenplay award in 1974 — and festival president Gilles Jacob said he has tried to land him for the role ever since the debut of E.T., which was the closing film of the 1982 festival.
“The memory of my first Cannes Film Festival, nearly 31 years ago with the debut of E.T., is still one of the most vibrant memories of my career,” Spielberg said in a press release.
The festival will be held from May 15 to 26.
