Matt Keeler is one of the captains of Team Guardian, a group of undergrad mechatronics systems engineering students at SFU. The team has been working on a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) model, pictured, which was designed to be small, portable and inexpensive. It is coupled with an open source hardware and software autopilot system. Video surveillance footage is relayed to the ground control station via an off-the-shelf wireless video system.
The team competed at the Unmanned Systems Canada 2010/2011 UAV/UGV Student Competition, which challenged teams to create a UAV that has the capability to aid firefighters in remote locations by giving them an aerial viewpoint. The UAV had to navigate using GPS waypoints and provide aerial footage over remote areas.
