SURREY – Since the release of Grand Theft Auto III 12 years ago, each subsequent iteration of the beloved series has gone on to receive glowing reviews and accolades. Now, with the release of Grand Theft Auto V (actually the ninth in the series), nothing seems to have changed, with the game having received almost universal praise from critics and fans.
If you haven’t already realized it by now, the launch of a new GTA has become something of a global event. With a massive campaign that spanned continents leading up to the game’s launch Tuesday (Sept. 17), GTA V is arguably the largest video game release since perhaps Halo 3, and certainly rivals that of any big-name Hollywood films. In fact, GTA V was recently revealed to have the largest production cost of any video game ever, at $266 million. That figure also makes it the second most expensive entertainment product ever assembled, next to Hollywood’s Pirates of the Caribbean: World’s End at $300 million.
It wouldn’t be surprising in the least if there was a noticeable dip in global productivity following the game’s release. I know of one reporter in particular who took the following Wednesday off just so he could explore the vastness of Los Santos, the game’s fictional Los Angeles. The reporter in question may or may not have been the writer of this piece.
But enough about me, this is all about you and what you’re able to do in the game, which has always been the series’ most attractive feature.
For GTA V, you follow the story of three unique individuals as they work together pulling off various heists for personal gain. Whether or not you choose to tackle the story missions is completely up to the player, as there are a million other things to keep busy with in the world of GTA V. Scuba diving up your alley? They’ve got you covered. Skydiving? Check. Street racing and customizing vehicles? Of course. Running around and kicking cows over in a field? If you’re so inclined. In the world of GTA, everything is game, and the level of depth you’re afforded in doing these things is still unmatched by every other copycat game out there. Yes, that means you, Saints Row and Sleeping Dogs.
Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about GTA and the almost mandatory criticism that follows the release of each and every iteration. While it’s still early days, I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before we hear out-of-touch zoomers and boomers complaining about the rape simulator that is GTA, and how it’s influencing our children. I mean, yes, you can do drugs in the game, yes you can pick up prostitutes and yes you can go to a strip club to get a lap dance, but you can also play tennis, go golfing and partake in a bike race. If the argument is that these games will encourage young people to partake in the vices shown in the game, we should see an immeasurable number of people also taking up the aforementioned sports in record numbers, which we don’t and won’t.
Anyhow, this is getting long and GTA V is now available to the world. I’m sure you can figure out where I’m going with this, you little deviant.
