Saturday, Dec. 1 is World AIDS Day, and will be marked locally with a candlelight vigil and fundraiser.
Red Ribbons 4 Life, as the local event is called, starts with a candlelight vigil from 5: 30 to 6: 30 p.m. at Positive Haven, at South Fraser Community Services Society (10697 135A St., Surrey).
Afterward, participants will walk to Olympia Pizza and Restaurant nearby for a "FUNdraiser." The doors open at 7 p.m. with the event itself getting underway at 8 p.m.
Olympia Pizza is at 10257 King George Blvd. and a donation of $5 is requested.
The evening features the Surrey Karaoke Idol Finals and Cabaret Show, featuring Jill Richards, Curtis Allan Dundas, Casandra Russell, Jennifer Geddes, David Cook, Lawrence Lacandula, Judy Jive, Empress Susan, Emperor Duane, Heather Weatherly, Onya Marx, Taylor Maid, Plastika Von Wrap, Wynonna Storm, Sinder Starr, Moaning Lisa Larinne and Starr Dupont.
The evening festivities will be emceed by Martin Rooney and Kim Rose.
World AIDS Day is held on Dec. 1 each year and is an opportunity for people around the world to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day, with the first event held in 1988.
Red Ribbons 4 Life is also a fundraiser to benefit the SFCSS Djeaf Mahler HIV/AIDS Foodbank and AIDS Tijuana.
There will be raffles, door prizes, auctions and surprises in store.
