More than 200 protestors staged a rally Saturday to fight against diesel trucks being allowed to rumble through their South Surrey neighbourhood.

They claim the trucks are poisoning children and families with carcinogenic fumes.

The rally was staged by the 32nd Avenue Community Alliance in an attempt to have the truck route removed from 32nd Avenue between 152nd and 176th streets. The rally was at the corner of 154th Street and 32nd Avenue.

Its organizer, Pauline Cremin, said that over 1,000 diesel highway trucks are rumbling within metres of houses, schoolyards and homes for the elderly.

"Knowing what we know about the deadly effects of diesel emissions, it is time for TransLink, City of Surrey and Ministry of Transportation to make the right decision for the health of the residents," she said.

Cremin was pleased with Saturday's turnout.

A meeting of TransLink's directors on Dec. 7 is next on the group's agenda.

"We may do something between now and then," Cremin said.
