Duh! What Christopher Poon is describing is a slightly higher-tech alternative to hacking off someone's finger in order to use their fingerprint.
If what's on the phone is sufficiently valuable to cause the desperate thief to scour everything the phone owner has touched in order to find a sufficiently clear, photographically perfect fingerprint, it is going to take them forever. More practical to use the hatchet. That's what they do in the movies.
