Saturday is celebration time in the Bolivar Heights area of North Surrey.

A daytime event on Sept. 8 will, for the first time, feature a beer garden to raise money for Bolivar Heights Community Association, plus live music by Tanja Michelle and John Dean, games, a silent auction and other attractions, in an area of Bolivar Park on 115th Avenue, near 136th Street.

"This is a chance for all members of our area to come out and see what changes we have (made), and will make, in our neighbourhood," said Ann Cassidy, a director of Bolivar Heights Community Association.

According to a post on the website bolivarheights.ca, the community takes its name from the Bolivar family who arrived in Nova Scotia from Germany in 1751. In pursuit of gold, Dennis Bolivar moved to the Yukon and later settled in Vancouver. His son Haddon Bolivar, who died in 1976, is credited for first developing the neighbourhood.
