SURREY – The smell the coffee will fill Surrey Arts Centre Thursday morning (Oct. 3) for the season-launching Classical Coffee Concert, to feature pianist Sarah Hagen and cellist Ariel Barnes.
The intimate studio theatre at the Bear Creek Park facility is the stage for the series, hosted by Hagen for a second year.
The music begins at 10:30 a.m.; an hour earlier, coffee and pastries are served.
The concert series concept grew from musical events Hagen hosted in the living room of her former home in the Comox Valley. "Key is the reception before, which is an important part of the experience for me," enthused the pianist, whose bio is posted at sarahhagen.com.

The second concert in the series at Surrey Arts Centre is Nov. 7, when Hagen will be joined by violinist Joan Blackman.
During the Classical Coffee Concert events, audience members will feel like they're in Hagen's living room as she introduces the musicians and the music, sharing her stories and musical insights. As well, the musicians are usually available for a chat after the performance.
Other concerts in the six-event series for 2013-2014 will feature Hagen solo on piano (Dec. 5), violist Marcus Takizawa (Jan. 16), soprano Robyn Driedger-Klassen (Feb. 13) and French horn player Oto Carrillo (March 13). Tickets for each concert are $25, including all fees. Spectators will receive a $5-per-ticket discount when three or more concerts are purchased.
