On Sunday afternoon a fire erupted in the basement suite of a home at the 11200 block of 203rd Street in Maple Ridge.

"The people upstairs smelled smoke and got out," said Maple Ridge fire chief Peter Grootendorst.

He noted that nobody was home in the lower suite.

"There was significant damage to the entire house and it even melted the siding of the house next door," Grootendorst added.

Eyewitness Karen Horne said there were at least 15 firefighters and several trucks attending the scene of the fire.

Grootendorst confirmed that there were no injuries.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is underway.
