Burglars very active in Newton
The Surrey RCMP is warning Newton residents about a recent rash of home break-ins.
Police believe a small but thorough crew is responsible for most of them. The thieves search for hiding spots, for gold and other valuables. There have been dozens of burglaries - mostly during daytime hours when people are at work - over the past several weeks.
The burglars have been entering single detached houses through back doors, windows and garages.
"Surrey RCMP's general duty officers and property crime units are actively investigating these incidents with the help of our crime analysts," Cpl. Bert Paquet said. "The last few weeks have seen probably twice the number we usually see."
The burglars haven't been partial to any particular neighborhoods in Newton. "It's pretty much all over," Paquet noted.
Meantime, he urges residents to not hide their valuables inside "age-old" hiding spots like bedroom drawers, closets or in clothing.
"Safeguarding valuables in a safety deposit box or a secured safe will make them less accessible for thieves and act as a stronger deterrent," he said. "Engraving valuables and having photos of them will make them more easily identifiable if lost or stolen."

In other news, Delta Police arrested a 36-year-old robbery suspect on Wednesday after a man was mugged while walking down 116th Street, near 77th Avenue.
