Coroner's inquest set into Surrey shooting
A coroner's inquest will be held into the death of a man who was shot dead by Surrey Mounties.
Adam Brian Purdie, 28, was killed during a shootout with police on March 2nd, 2011, near King George Boulevard just north of Highway 10. The Saanich Police were asked to investigate the case and found that the Surrey Mountie who fired 30 rounds at Purdie was criminally blameless in his death. "The officer involved in this shooting was left with no alternative other than the use of deadly force," A/Sgt. Dean Jantzen said at the conclusion of the investigation.
The name of the officer involved in the shooting has not been released and he was subsequently transferred to another province.
The police investigation revealed Purdie had been upset about breaking up with a girlfriend and had been within two blocks of her new boyfriend's house when the Surrey RCMP stopped him during a traffic check.
The inquest, to be held by the BC Coroners Service in Burnaby, will be heard on June 24 through 28.
Presiding coroner Tara Devine and a jury will hear from subpoenaed witnesses and at the conclusion of the inquest the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.
