SURREY - The main attraction on the peninsula this weekend may be the 33rd annual Tour de White Rock, but not everyone will be sporting shaved legs and lycra cycling shorts.

Mountain bikers will be showing off their supermans, back flips and no-footer can-cans at the annual Dirt Jam 2 taking place at the South Surrey Bike Park on Saturday afternoon.

"If you are coming into town for the Tour de White Rock and you want to see the other aspect of the sport, please come and check it out," said Simon Quinn-Sears, the event's organizer.

The family-oriented event is geared to the more adventurous cycling enthusiast who wants to see some top local talent ride the newly remodeled dirt jumps at the South Surrey Bike Park.

Think of it as a backyard barbecue, Quinn-Sears said - with a generous helping of extreme mountain biking, of course.

"We'll be there barbecuing, listening to some tunes and riding the jumps," he said. "We've got a DJ coming out, Uli's is coming back and barbecuing and the City of Surrey has ponied up all the money for everything."

This year the Dirt Jam 2 will be run in an open-jam format.

There is no registration and riders of all abilities are welcome to come out and participate free of charge.

"It lets anyone regardless of their ability level to come out and ride the jumps. So whether they have just gotten into dirt jumping or they are paid professionally to ride, everyone will be in there together," Quinn-Sears said.

Building on the success from last year's jam, which saw 350 people turn out, Quinn-Sears hopes the event will be a perfect opportunity to showcase the newly rebuilt dirt jumps.

Local company ESP Parks, run by South Surrey resident and pro rider Cory Derpak, has spent the past weeks reshaping the jumps and creating new lines that will challenge riders of all skill levels.

"We are definitely looking forward to having a lot of kids out, a lot of people riding and having a good shred and hanging out, listening to some good tunes and watching some people hit some jumps," Derpak said.

Derpak says ESP has plans to work on a number of other bike parks throughout the Lower Mainland and hopes to soon be working on a new park in Cloverdale.

The Dirt Jam 2 promises to have plenty of prizes from local bike companies and swag for people of all ages.

The jam's title sponsor, Peninsula Cycles, has donated a bike that will be raffled off with proceeds going to support the Surrey Offroad Cycling Enthusiasts bike club.

The Dirt Jam 2 runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Quinn-Sears expects the pros to be hitting the jumps between noon and 1 p.m.
