Police are surprised nobody was injured in two dramatic train crashes involving cars in Surrey this week.

The latest happened Tuesday, at about 8: 30 p.m., when a 1989 Honda Accord was dragged for roughly half a kilometre after a freight train hit it on Colebrook Road near 131A Street.

Police said the 18-year-old Surrey driver didn't see a turn in the road on account of the fog and ended up on tracks. He apparently tried to drive along the tracks for a couple of car lengths, but got stuck. Fortunately he was able to get out before the oncoming train struck his car, demolishing the Accord's rear end.

The other crash happened Monday, in the 12800-block of 80th Avenue in Newton, at about 7: 15 p.m.

A Dodge Caravan was dragged about 50 feet after its driver, a 27-year-old Surrey woman, hit the brakes and slid into a freight train that was traveling about 15 kilometres a hour. Police at press time were trying to determine if the driver had attempted to beat the train or didn't see it.

Besides the driver, two other people were in the Caravan, which sustained about $8,000 damage.
