Kids will be very involved in the annual Surrey Remembers event in Cloverdale on Sunday, Nov. 11.

The Remembrance Day gathering at the plaza outside Surrey Museum runs from 9: 30 a.m. to 12: 30 p.m. Surrey residents are invited to bring their families to the service at the cenotaph, then come in from the cold to the museum and/or Surrey Archives building and take part in activities.

Indoors, children can make "peaceful crafts," such as tissue paper poppies and thankful tree artwork, to commemorate the day, or write thank-you notes on post cards that will be delivered to Lower Mainland veterans and their families.

Also, families can view Second World War documentary videos in the museum's theatre, or watch demonstrations of weaving and spinning in the textile studio. It's a chance to "see a heritage loom used to rehabilitate veterans and try your hand at weaving on the museum's table loom."

Or enjoy a warm beverage while viewing Remembrance Day projects from a Grade 2 Cloverdale Traditional School class.

A large number of families attend the Remembrance Day ceremony every year, including kids of all ages. "Parents seem to want that kind of meaningful experience for their kids around this date," an organizer of the event told the Now.

Also at the museum, from noon to 1 p.m., join local author Robert Mackay in the museum's theatre for "Soldier of the Horse" and learn about Surrey's connections to the First World War Canadian cavalry, and the importance of horses during the war. This lecture is by donation and is suitable for all ages.

Across the plaza at Surrey Archives, warm up with refreshments downstairs, then come up to the reference room to see wartime newspapers, documents, photographs, a slideshow on Surrey's participation in the World Wars and listen to the Veterans' Oral History Collection.
