When Peter Buxton and his wife, Vera, travelled to Haida Gwaii last September, he photographed some amazing things, including cork boots left to gather moss for nearly 70 years.
"During the Second World War, those refusing conscription were sent to work camps, including a logging camp on Louise Island," Buxton explains. "Red cedar and Sitka spruce were harvested to help the war effort. At the conclusion of the war, the workers dropped their tools and equipment and immediately left the island to go back to Prince Rupert and on home. The rainforest is slowly absorbing these remnants."
This month, a photograph of the long-abandoned boots is among several in Buxton's Haida Gwaii, Mystical exhibit at Watershed Gallery Shop, 11425 84th Ave., located not far from his home in North Delta.
