The Surrey RCMP's Criminal Collision Investigation Team has been honoured by the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police for outstanding work.
"They've done some spectacular things," said Staff Sgt. Paul Mulvihill, in charge of Surrey RCMP traffic enforcement. "We've had a lot of success in court with guilty pleas."
Since the 10-member team was formed in 2010 to tackle complex traffic crashes involving serious injury or death, its officers have investigated 131 collisions on the city's roads.
Mulvihill said the program will be expanded into two teams of eight officers on April 1.
Victoria Police Chief Jamie Graham, who at one time was in charge of the Surrey RCMP, is the chairman of the BCACP's traffic safety committee. He handed the team members their award plaques in Surrey.
"This specialized traffic unit has been recognized and greatly appreciated by not only the residents of their community, but by the larger police community in British Columbia," Graham said. "Their investigative culminating in criminal charges is considered a best practice within law enforcement."
Insp. Lee Chanin, of the Surrey RCMP, said the team's "tireless" work ethic and diligence has helped bring justice to families who've lost loved ones. "Our investigators continue to set the standard for traffic collision investigators and are seen as some of the best in the province," Chanin said.
