DELTA - Cpl. Benjamin "Monty" Robinson has been found guilty of obstruction of justice in the 2008 crash that killed a South Delta man.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Janice Dillon handed down the verdict Friday morning in a New Westminster courtroom.

Robinson was charged following the Oct. 25, 2008 crash that killed Orion Hutchinson. The 21-year-old died after a collision between his motorcycle and the off-duty RCMP officer's Jeep at the corner of 6th Avenue and Gilchrist Drive in Tsawwassen.

The officer's charge stemmed from his actions following the crash. He left the scene of the collision, which occurred at about 10:15 p.m., and walked to his home, a short distance away.

Robinson returned 10 minutes later and advised police that he had consumed two beers at a party earlier and two shots of vodka at home.

During an eight-day trial last month, the defence argued that Robinson's act of drinking the vodka before returning to the scene was not willful but merely the actions of an alcoholic.

Crown prosecutor Kris Pechet argued Robinson was acting on his police training and knowledge that drinking after the crash, and then admitting it to police, could potentially thwart any impaired driving investigation.
