Sniper rifles in Surrey -is this a joke, Jinny?

The Editor,

Re: "Watts to feds: Get tough on guns," the Now, Jan. 24.

The article regarding how Surrey politicians are targeting gun control, specifically sniper rifles with the example of the "Steyr-Mannlicher HS .50 sniper rifle," is creating a misdirected fear and outcry that preys on the ignorance people have regarding firearms.

Of all the shootings listed, it is never mentioned what type of firearm was used. I bet none of them involved a multi-thousand dollar rifle that is a metre-and-a-half long, costs $10 per shot and is loud enough to be heard in Hope.

What a great example of sensationalism and creating fear of something that rarely happens or even exists in our neighbourhoods. How do the politicians define a sniper rifle? If it has a scope? If it is black? If it looks scary?

I am all for taking guns off the streets. But guess what? Long guns (rifles) are not on our streets. When was the last time a shooting in Surrey involved a bolt-action hunting rifle?
