Surrey "distracted driver" busted with drugs, cash
If he was distracted before, he's certainly paying attention now.
A Surrey motorist who was recently stopped in Tynehead on suspicion of distracted driving is facing big trouble with the law after some heroin, crack cocaine and tens of thousands of dollars from his car.
A Surrey Mountie pulled the 22-year-old Surrey man over in the 10800-block of 160th Street after he was spotted talking on his cell phone while driving, an offence carrying a $167 fine.
When he wasn't able to show any ID, the driver was told to exit the car, and as he did, police allege, he tossed a small baggie on the floor. The Mountie arrested him and while searching the car found a backpack containing 10 grams of crack, 1.5 grams of heroin and a load of bills. The driver, whose name has not been released, was released from custody on a promise to appear in Surrey Provincial court on May 13 on a charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
"February is Distracted Driving month for police and officers have made it a priority to target those drivers observed using handheld devices while driving," Cpl. Bert Paquet said. "This is a classic example of some of the added benefits that come from having such increased enforcement on our roadways. Our Traffic Services officers work hard to keep our city safe by way of traffic safety enforcement but also through efforts to counter the illegal flow of drugs on our streets."
