Surrey Mounties are cautioning local high school students to be extra careful on their way to and from school following a spate of cell phone muggings throughout the city.

"We've had no report of injuries," Cpl. Bert Paquet said. "We're working hard to catch the people responsible before something bad happens."

He said police have been receiving "maybe a call a day," that a robbery happened, and more in the past few days.

"Simple steps like trusting your instincts and being aware of your surroundings will help reduce the risk of being a potential victim," Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said. "Police and the school district recommend parents take this opportunity to speak with their kids about basic safety steps such as not texting and walking, avoiding short cuts, walking with friends, and calling ahead if you are going to be delayed."

Police also advise students not to use their phones in full view on the street. "If you do have to use it, be discreet," Paquet said. He also suggested that they jot down their phone's serial number and keep the number in a safe place, and get software that can remotely locate their phone using built-in GPS.
