The lead organizer of next month's Terry Fox Run in Fraser Heights is looking for volunteers to help organize the 32nd annual trek for cancer research.
Sara Pickering, a local realtor, needs some helping hands with the run, set to start at Fraser Heights Recreation Centre on Sunday, Sept. 16. She took the reins last week after Kevington Building Corp., owners of the Fraser Point and Fraser Heights Village malls, announced it wouldn't organize this year's run.
"Now that they've stepped down and I'm teaming up with the City of Surrey and running it out of the rec centre, I think it has a lot of potential," said Pickering, who has participated in the run for the last 15 years or so.
She currently has seven volunteers and needs 10 more to help organize donations, merchandise, media and PR, registration and refreshments.
Last year's run brought out 100 people, but Pickering hopes 150 will turn out this year. The Fraser Heights run is the only Terry Fox Run in North Surrey.
"I've talked to some people from Guildford and Fleetwood that thought the Fraser Heights run was only for Fraser Heights," she said, adding that anyone is welcome to join at the starting line. Participation is by donation.
The event offers a two-kilometre run for kids and a five-kilometre run for youth and adults.
A volunteer information session will take place Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 8 p.m. at Fraser Heights rec centre, at 10588 160th St. For info, email sarapickering@telus.net, call 604802-4441 or visit myfraserheights.ca.
