Surrey Museum is preparing for a "Viking Invasion," title of a special event timed with the Cloverdale facility's new exhibit.

The Vikings: Master Mariners, Traders, Colonists and Artisans, an exhibit on loan from The Manitoba Museum, is on display at Surrey Museum from Feb. 12 to April 13.

The exhibit offers an "updated" view of Vikings.

On the afternoon of Saturday, Feb. 16, Surrey Museum will transform into a Viking encampment for "Viking Invasion," first in a series of monthly Discover Saturday events.

Historically outfitted members of Reik Felag Norse Culture Recreation Society will be involved in the special event.

The non-profit group aims to dispel myths and stereotypes surrounding Viking culture and society.

"Our goal is to produce living history," said Linda Woodcock, a Reik Felag member. "We interact with the public, answer their questions and even let them try their hands at an ancient craft," such as weaving, spinning, leatherwork, metalwork, spice trading and sword practice.

Gerry Larson's Viking-inspired jewelry will be featured, along with the dance troupe Poulsbo Leikarringen, from Poulsbo, Wash.

Those with a deeper interest in Vikings are encouraged to register ($5 fee) for the hour-long "History Speaks: Vikings!" event, on Feb. 16 starting at 2: 30 p.m. For details, call 604-592-6956 or visit www.surrey. ca/heritage.
