The Now's Race for Babies fundraiser is returning to Fraser Downs Racetrack & Casino this Friday, Oct. 26, for another exciting night at the races.
The second annual event raises money for the Surrey Food Bank's Tiny Bundles program, which provides weekly food hampers to more than 200 pregnant women and mothers with children under the age of one. Eggs, milk, vegetables and baby formula for moms who can't nurse are just a few of the items in each hamper.
"I always like to say there are no hungry babies in Surrey thanks to our generous donors supporting the program," said Marilyn Herrmann, executive director of the Surrey Food Bank. "We know that when moms are bringing their little ones, they're leaving here with a full week of nutrition for that baby."
In 2011, roughly 6,000 of the Surrey Food Bank's 15,000 monthly recipients were babies and children.
Tiny Bundles started as a result of some volunteers who recognized there were a lot of families in need of baby food in the community. For the past 11 years, the program has helped feed hungry toddlers throughout the city, eventually spreading from Surrey to food banks throughout the province.
"Provincially, food banks used to see about 41 per cent children and babies. That number dropped to 29.3 per cent," said Herrmann.
"The interesting thing is, our numbers have stayed at 41 per cent. That tells us that we have a very young community, a growing community of young families and new families."
Last year's Race for Babies raised $11,000 for the Tiny Bundles program, which spends a considerable amount of money on the items in each hamper.
"Last year, we spent about $180,000 on baby formula. Just baby formula," said Herrmann.
With the purchase of a $50 ticket, guests can feast on a buffet dinner, snack on hors d'oeuvres and wash it all down with two beverages. The fundraiser also features live entertainment, a live and silent auction and a view of the racetrack.
"It's a lot of fun and it really is going to a good cause," said Herrmann. "You're getting a fun evening, plus you know that your dollars are going to feed some babies.
"As long as there are babies, we're going to support them." The event starts at 5: 30 p.m. and runs until the races end at Fraser Downs, located at 17755 60th Ave. For tickets and more information, call the Now at 604-572-0064.
