Craig Kielburger, the co-founder of Me to We and Free the Children Foundation, will be in Surrey as keynote speaker of the inaugural SASSY Awards night.
The Oct. 14 event at Bell Performing Arts Centre will recognize "Service Above Self by Surrey Youth," with seven awards to be given out.
The event will honour "youth aged 16 to 21 who are living in Surrey or White Rock, and are making a difference in our community by demonstrating the Rotary (Club) ideal of 'service above self,'" according to event organizers. The event is hosted by Semiahmoo Rotary Club in conjuction with sponsorship from White Rock Rotary Club.
Each award winner will receive a $500 bursary plus $500 to be donated to the charity of the winner's choice.
Kielburger, 28, is an Ontario-born activist for the rights of children. In 2007, he was named a Member of the Order of Canada.
Young performers at the SASSY event include Emily Taylor Adams, Joe Given, Semiahmoo Jazz Combo, Shan-E-Punjab Arts Club bhangra group, Surrey Celebration Dance Team and Tommy Alto. 'OZ'-LIKE BOWLING OCT. 5
Wizard of Oz-themed costumes are encouraged for bowlers at a fun charity event in Surrey on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
A best-costume prize is up for grabs during the 10th annual Friends of We Care event, which raises cash to send Easter Seals kids to camp.
This year's event at Xcalibur Bowling Centre will have teams of four and five people begin the games at 4 p.m. The fee per team is $400.

DADS, BABIES AND BOOKS
So-called "Man in the Moon" storytime events are back at Strawberry Hill public library in Surrey.
The sessions are for babies (newborn to 24 months) and the men in their lives - dads, stepdads, foster dads, grandfathers, uncles and all male caregivers. The program offers a chance for men to bond with babies through songs, stories and puppets.

'PHOTO WALK' ON OCT. 1
Camera-shy people should probably stay clear of a portion of White Rock this Saturday morning (Oct. 1).
A so-called "Photo Walk" could involve up to 50 camera-toting people, from 10 a.m. to noon.
It's part of a fourth annual worldwide event organized by Scott Kelby, a Florida-based photographer and best-selling computer and technology book author. The 2010 Photo Walk saw more than 30,000 photographers participate in more than 1,000 locations, snapping some six million images in just one day - making it "the largest global social photography event in the history of photography."
The White Rock version of this year's Photo Walk will be led by Lynne Kelman, Carol How and Deb Reny, all members of Crescent Beach Photography Club.
Once all those images of White Rock are captured and uploaded to a website, the three event organizers will then select photographs for award consideration at the global level.
"For us, it's not so much about those awards, it's the walk - the social part of getting together and photographing your own hometown," Kelman told the Now.
"Some retailers are allowing us in their stores to take photos, and the firefighters at the station said we could photograph them washing their trucks, that kind of thing.. We want people to wander the back alleys and think outside the box."
The group will walk from Central Plaza to the viewpoint of the pier at Victoria Avenue, a trip that will include four blocks on both sides of Johnston Road. A post-event gathering will happen at Small Rituals coffee shop.
