The Editor,
Re: "Red-scare politics are dirty and 'upset people,' Brar says," the Now, Aug. 30.
B.C. Liberal MLA Bill Bennett seems to be living in the Cold War era, when the biggest threat to one's freedom was the "Red Commies."
How desperate can the Liberal party be?
Cuba has almost no gap between the rich and the poor and has universal health care - what's so bad about that? Are Vancouver and Surrey any better, with their rampant poverty and the fact that no one seems to want to do anything about it?
Bennett was so concerned about Jagrup Brar's visit to Cuba - why wasn't he up in arms about the trade mission that 12 Canadian premiers, including Christy Clark, are taking to China this September? China isn't exactly a champion of human rights and any sort of free speech is usually crushed the moment it rises.
Oh, and I almost forgot - China is a communist country. Maybe Bennett should be more consistent with his outrage. If the world was right, Cuba would be the country that was welcome, and China the one that was shunned. Unfortunately though, as the saying goes, one must never bite that hand that feeds him.
Oh well. At least the Liberals will be out soon and we'll be able to focus on real issues that actually matter.
