A special edition of the Now has earned its editor a national award.
Beau Simpson is winner of a Newspapers Canada 2013 Great Idea Award for the Dec. 24, 2012 edition of the Now that he dubbed "Junior Journalists."
The issue, which had a theme of giving in the community, was months in the making.
Simpson visited Ms. Pesce and Mrs. Brister's Grade 6/7 class at Latimer Road Elementary in Surrey and coached them for eight weeks in preparation for the edition.
Everything published in the paper was from the kids in that class. They generated the ideas, wrote the stories, took the photos and some kids even came into the newsroom after school to help Simpson lay out the paper.
"This award should really go to the kids," Simpson said. "The honesty and warmth in the students' work touched our community's heart in a way that we have not seen for many years."
Simpson will be honoured during the Great Idea Awards luncheon on May 2 in Ottawa.
"Junior Journalists" is also a finalist in the 2013 Ma Murray provincial competition. The winners will be announced on April 20 at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond.
