To help bring some Christmas spirit to those often forgotten in hospitals or extended care facilities, Nurse Next Door is bringing a senior home for the holidays this year through its "Home for the Holidays" contest.
"For seniors living in medical facilities, often the reason they cannot make it home for the holidays is because they require the assistance of trained caregivers or medical staff," said Jamie Sinclair of Nurse Next Door Vancouver.
"If the elderly patients' family members are unable to help with their daily living activities and care needs, the senior may not be discharged."
The Home for the Holidays winning senior will be provided with two days of complimentary home-care services based on their individual needs.
Promising to do whatever it takes to make their holiday special, Nurse Next Door's team can provide home-care services ranging from friendly companionship, meal preparation, transportation and errand-running right through to around-the-clock medical care from a registered nurse.
"After decades of celebrating the season with family and traditions, this time of year can amplify issues of loneliness and depression," said Sinclair.
"While it's important to provide for seniors' physical needs, what really excites us is knowing that we'll be making their lives better at a time when they may spend Christmas alone."
Nurse Next Door Vancouver is accepting Home for the Holidays contest submissions via email until Dec. 19 and plans to make the contest a yearly tradition.
Contest submissions of 300 words or less can be sent to homefortheholidays@ nursenextdoor.com. The winning senior will be announced and contacted on Dec. 20.
Nurse Next Door is a local in-home senior care provider focuses on delivering home-care services that help seniors age healthy and happy at home.
"We want to make a senior's holiday special," said Sinclair. "Nurse Next Door can help with Christmas baking, holiday decorating or shopping - anything that would make this season special."
