SURREY - A Surrey couple is accused of going on a Bonnie and Clyde style crime spree.
Matthew Sidney Soper, 26, and his girlfriend Hayley Kay Scales, 25, were arrested at their East Newton home in connection with an alleged binge of criminal activity from Chilliwack to West Vancouver that began in April and carried on into late June.
Police allege the couple traveled mostly at night, stealing cars, breaking into homes and parked vehicles, and then using stolen credit cards to buy merchandise from numerous retail stores throughout the Lower Mainland.
"They were definitely busy," charged Sgt. Gord Elias, of the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team.
Elias said it's unusual to see couples working together like this couple is alleged to have done.
He said police had them under surveillance for a while.
"After an extensive investigation, a search warrant was conducted at the suspects' home in Surrey where property belonging to numerous victims was seized and identified," Elias said. Soper had been charged with 64 crimes and Scales has been charged with 23.
