Turned out the pipe bomb that spurred the evacuation of some classes at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Newton on Monday morning was "just a hunk of pipe."
Surrey RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger said students were evacuated from the southwest side of the school and a police cordon was set up after a Kwantlen employee spotted what looked like a pipe bomb lying in the parking lot near shipping and receiving, behind the Birch building, and called police.
The RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit sent out a remote-control robot to detonate the eight-inch-long metal pipe.
"There's a bunch of emergency vehicles right now and they have the robot out to detonate the package, which they're calling a device," Jeff Groat, an editor of the student newspaper The Runner, said prior to the anticlimactic ending. "There was a huge crowd of students at one point but they were all evacuated from the scene."
