Delta councillor Sylvia Bishop has been acclaimed as the NDP candidate for Delta North.
"I am looking forward to standing up for the people and community that I love," Bishop said. "I am honoured to have this opportunity to join Adrian Dix and the NDP team to change B.C. for the better."
Bishop is serving her first term on Delta council. A win in next year's provincial election would trigger a civic byelection.
She decided to put her name forward to be the NDP candidate for Delta North after current NDP MLA Guy Gentner announced his retirement earlier this fall.
The deadline for filing for the nomination was last Tuesday. No other candidates came forward.
Bishop's acclamation will be confirmed at a nomination meeting on Dec. 2.
"As a city councillor and teacher, I have fought for people and the environment in my community," she said. "But there are many issues facing families that can only be addressed at a provincial level and that is what I will do if elected."
Bishop is a former elementary school teacher in Delta, and a lifelong resident of the community.
"Sylvia's background and experience show that she will be a strong representative for the residents of North Delta," said Dix. "I'm looking forward to campaigning with her over the coming months."
