FIVE RODEO PERFORMANCES WITH FINALS: -- Friday, May 17th - 7: 30pm (Pool A)

Rodeo 101: 8 seconds of action

The only equipment allowed in bareback riding is a simple leather handle, which is the cowboy's only grip during JAKE VOLD his eight-second ride. A rider must mark the horse out of the chute by keeping his heels over the break of the shoulders until the horse completes its first jump. A rider will be disqualified if he touches the animal or equipment with his free hand or if he is bucked off. The animal's athletic performance is just as valued as that of the cowboy, with the horse's performance accounting for half the rider's total score.

Get ready for action!

The Champions are back, and the competition is going to be fierce. The 2013 Cloverdale Rodeo is set to showcase some of the most talented up-and-comers in rodeo competing alongside world champs in four main events: Bareback, Bull Riding, Ladies Barrel Racing and Saddle Bronc. The invitational format, which has earned the Cloverdale Rodeo international acclaim, continues to draw the top names and some of the most consistently challenging bucking stock in the business. Top pro rodeo contestants in each of the four events will compete for a total of $328,000 in cash prizes and, most importantly, the championship title.

Cloverdale Rodeo: Pork's on the menu

Thanks for helping us corral rodeo volunteers

Our volunteer orientation night on April 24 was a resounding success. I don't ever remember seeing that many new people show up in prior years. Thank you so much for your coverage. I guess that means you do have "pull" with readers.

Kudos & Kvetches

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his Conservatives have unearthed a lot of dirt on Justin Trudeau since he became leader of the federal Liberal party. Almost immediately, the Conservatives began running attack ads questioning Trudeau's lack of experience, his good looks, his name appeal and willingness to take his shirt off for charity. Taking your shirt of at the Calgary Stampede or while picketing an abortion clinic, sure - but for charity?
