Two female drivers have swerved into ditches in Delta in the past week, and both were found by off-duty police officers.

"It appears a lot of cars are going into ditches. We've seen a few in the last couple of weeks," said Delta Const. Ciaran Feenan.

Feenan said weather was likely a factor in these coincidental incidents.

"Late night and early morning, the road conditions are less than ideal this time of year. Slow down and expect the unexpected," Feenan urged drivers.

Last Wednesday (Feb. 1), a Surrey mom was on her way to work around 7 a.m. when she swerved to miss some ducks that were crossing Highway 17, lost control of her car and landed wheels-up in a water-filled ditch.

Alyse McDonald, 25, was with her son Jordan, 6, and daughter Haylee, 2.

Const. Aaron Jabs, who works with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, was off duty and was heading down the highway with his wife, near 52nd Street, when they saw Jordan scrambling out of the ditch. Jabs rushed down the steep ditch and into the water.

"I did what any off-duty RCMP officer would do in the same situation," Jabs said.

On Sunday, another woman drove off the road into a Ladner ditch. An off-duty Delta police officer driving in the 8000-block of Ladner Trunk Road came across the vehicle, which was submerged in the ditch. He helped get the woman out of the vehicle and while the driver did not sustain any injuries, she did show signs of impairment.

The driver was treated by paramedics before being taken to Delta police headquarters to provide breath samples.

She was issued a 24-hour driving suspension and a 90-day driving prohibition.
