Re: "Passed on by," the Now, Oct. 9.
I am 18 years old, wheelchair bound and attend Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey four days a week and I use the bus to get there and back. My assistant Sabin and I have class starting at 8: 30 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, meaning we have to catch the 7: 45 a.m. 312 bus. One morning the traffic was backed up so Sabina didn't make it to my house in time to get to the bus stop. Therefore she was going to meet me at the bus stop and we were going to bus it to Kwantlen together from there. The bus driver of the bus Sabina was on passed right by the stop I was waiting at.
When he was questioned by Sabina as to why he didn't stop to pick me up he said, "I didn't see her." Sabina was annoyed at the bus driver so she got off the bus at the next stop. She and I then walked to the Scott Road bus exchange (only five blocks from the stop on 72nd by Heath Elementary) and proceeded to catch the 319 that would take us to Kwantlen Polytechnic. As the 312 bus driver supposedly hadn't seen me at the bus stop we were five minutes late for class.
I think the bus driver of this particular 312 bus just didn't want to take the time out of his morning to lower the ramp, get me on the bus, then secure my wheelchair down.
