Re: "Queen's usefulness next to nil," the Now, June 7.
It is important for readers to have a balanced view on the significant role played by the queen and family members.
There are 54 country members of the Commonwealth and the royal family supports and lends its patronage to more than 3,000 charities throughout the world.
When William and Kate were married, they requested guests, in lieu of gifts, contribute funds to 26 smaller, little known charities. These organizations do work with the homeless, mentally ill exservicemen, young offenders, victims of bullying, and teenage drug addicts. More than £1 million was raised.
The queen has more than 600 charities with which she is directly involved on an ongoing basis. Nearly 200 of the charities the royal family sponsor are in Canada.
The royal family has had a lot of adverse publicity over the years, but Queen Elizabeth has continued to present herself to the public with the grace, poise and integrity that is so rarely seen today.
The queen has rightfully earned the respect of loyal followers for 60 years of service. Is there a world politician who has lived this same length of time who can compare to the good works she has done herself and has inspired in others in 54 countries? Let us remember to appreciate our heritage.
