It's panto season in Surrey and White Rock, bringing plenty of Pinocchio, Phantom and Pirates to local stages.
Three pantomimes are in the works, including Fraser Valley Gilbert & Sullivan Society's Phantom of the Panto (Nov. 28 to Dec. 9 at Surrey Arts Centre), a White Rock Players' Club version of Pinocchio (Nov. 30 to Dec. 29 at Coast Capital Playhouse) and Ellie King's Robinson Crusoe and The Pirates (Dec. 20 to Jan. 6 at Surrey Arts Centre).
Tom Cleevely is The Phantom in the FVGSS production. With inspiration from The Phantom of the Opera, the twisted musical promises to put people in a holiday mood during its two-week-plus run at Surrey Arts Centre. Behind the scenes are Mike Balser (artistic director), Timothy Tucker (musical director), Carol Seitz (choreographer) and Reginald Pillay (producer). Check www. fvgss.org for details.
In White Rock, Susanne de Pencier directs Pinocchio, starring Bryce Mills as the Dame and Michelle Gaetz as the title character. The show serves as the 58th annual pantomime for White Rock Players' Club (whiterockplayers.ca). The role of Sophia is played by Melanie Minty, who promises to write about the experience in her arts column for the Now next Thursday.
Ellie King's panto at Surrey Arts Centre is produced by Royal Canadian Theatre Company, with reduced ticket prices this season. Visit www.rctheatreco.com for more info.
