Delta and Surrey residents are paying the highest prices for gas than any other major cities in North America.
Those are the findings of a recent list compiled by gasbuddy.com, a website dedicated to listing gas prices for cities and towns across the continent.
In fact, the top 10 cities on the list all hail from B.C., with eight out of 10 being from the Lower Mainland.
Delta came in at North America's most expensive city to gas up in with $1.44 per litre followed closely by Surrey at less than a cent behind. Others in the top 10 include Pitt Meadows, Burnaby, Coquitlam and Richmond. By contrast, the cheapest gas in North America was at 83.7 cents per litre, located in Danville, Va.
According to Jason Toews, cofounder of gasbuddy.com, B.C.'s high prices are largely attributed to the amount of taxes associated with the fuel, which adds up to around 49 cents per litre in the Lower Mainland.
"The Metro Vancouver area has some of the highest gas taxes in North America," said Toews. "It's competing with Montreal, but right now, the top ten major towns and cities for high gas prices are all in B.C., largely in the Lower Mainland area."
And while there are communities with higher gas prices than Delta and Surrey in B.C., such as Port Alice at $1.49 per litre as of Wednesday, Toews noted the list only took into account cities with more than five gas stations.
On a country-to-country basis, Toews said Canadians always pay more for fuel than their neighbours to the south.
"Again, that's due to taxes," he said, adding. "It kind of hurts when you see cities like Danville, Va., at 83.7 cents per litre for the same product. It's been a while since we've seen prices like that in Canada."
But all may not be lost. Toews noted that drivers in the area often have a handful of options available to them, if they're willing to do a bit of research.
"One of the things you can do is just to pay attention, shop around for cheaper prices," said Toews. "Depending on where your commute goes, you can actually save a bit on gas. If you take a look at Surrey for example, we're seeing the cheapest (gas available) is $1.35, while the most expensive is $1.44, so there are options out there."
At press time, the cheapest gas in Surrey listed on gasbuddy.com was $1.35 at Super Save on the Langley Bypass. The most expensive were several stations listed at $1.44.
