I think it is time for Surrey city council to stop playing ostrich and get its head out of the sand when it comes to fireworks.
This year, Halloween in Newton was filled with the usual barrage of explosions and fireworks in the sky.
Newton will experience a repeat of this during Diwali. This will be followed by Surrey city council's disturbing, pandering silence on this subject.
I say we rethink our policy in Surrey on fireworks. There is no real practical ban on fireworks in Surrey.
Firstly, it is ridiculous to restrict fireworks in some parts of the Metro Vancouver region and make them readily available in others.
It does not work. As a person who is in favour of fireworks and regulating them properly, I miss the neighbourhood interaction during our annual fireworks displays. I felt safer out on the streets with everyone out watching and participating. It was fun.
Fireworks are a regional issue. It should be all or nothing. I say bring them back, regulating them for both Halloween and Diwali in Surrey.
