Half a game of rugby was not nearly enough for the Bayside Sharks in the opening day of the Canadian Direct Insurance premier league schedule Saturday.

Playing on the road against defending provincial champion Capilano in North Vancouver, the Sharks played well in the first half before fading in the final 40 minutes en route to a 32-6 loss.

"It was fantastic rugby right up until just before the half when they scored on us to take the lead," said Sharks coach Pat Kearney. "From my perspective, it was 39 minutes of greatness and now the guys know first-hand what it takes to do business for 80 minutes on a Saturday.

"We played well in the first half and had some chances and then we played a lot of defence in the second half. We were playing the defending champions on the road in week one and to be honest, it could have been a lot worse."

Pete Clifford accounted for all of Bayside's scoring with a pair of first-half penalty kicks.

The Sharks return home Saturday to host the UBC Old Boys Ravens at South Surrey Athletic Park. Premier game time is 2: 45 p.m.

Elsewhere, the Surrey Beavers waited until the last minute before posting a narrow 17-12 win over Richmond in Okanagan Springs Brewery first division action at Sullivan Heights Park.

Hard work paid off in the end as the Beavers stole the ball from Richmond in a goal-line scrum and quickly off-loaded the ball to No. 8 James Kelly who pounded it in for the winning points.

Clay Ross and Kalepi Gupkae also scored tries for Surrey while Ryno Jacobs rounded out the scoring with one conversion.

"We were awfully hard on ourselves and made the game much closer than it should have been," said Beavers coach Kevin Taylor. "We missed three or more shots at the goal and had a try called back. It was a tight game but in the end we deserved to get the win. It's early and we're still working out some bugs. We had some problems but sometimes you have to have some pain before you get better execution."

Surrey hits the road this weekend for a game in Kamloops.
