City council votes on muffler site

White Rock city council was expected to vote Monday night (past the Now's press time) on final approval for a development at the former White Rock Mufflers site following a heated public hearing two weeks ago.

During that meeting, dozens of residents came out in opposition of a proposal that would have seen a four-storey commercial/residential complex erected at the muffler site, located at the corner of Marine Drive and Oxford Street on White Rock's waterfront.

While the developers pleaded their case during the hearing, the overwhelming opposition led to them deciding to revert back to the original development plans, that would see a three-storey complex built in its stead and less a few townhouse units in the centre of the complex.

Monday night's council vote was set to be based on the original plan for the site, which includes 62 living units, 101 parking spaces plus 21 for visitors and commercial users, and a maximum height of 49.25 feet for the tallest building.
