It was feast or famine for the Surrey Eagles in two B.C. Hockey League home games last weekend, but the results of both encounters left the Birds with indigestion.

The Eagles scored five times and had to settle for a 5-5 draw with the Powell River Kings on Friday night. Sunday afternoon the Eagles cranked 41 shots at Prince George Spruce Kings goalie Kirk Thompson and came away empty handed in a 2-0 loss to send the South Surrey lads into the Christmas break riding a four-game winless streak.

"We ended up with one out of four points on the weekend and I know it sounds stupid, but we could easily have earned three points and possibly even all four," said Eagles coach Matt Erhart. "It was one of those things where maybe we won a game earlier in the year where we made a comeback with a bounce or two in our favour and now things are just evening up.

We deserved to win at least one of those games this weekend and but we came away with just one point."

The weekend results saw the Eagles drop to third place in the BCHL's Mainland Division. Surrey trails division-leading Chilliwack by seven points and Prince George by three, although the Eagles have games in hand on both teams.

The one that got away came back to haunt the Eagles Sunday afternoon at South Surrey Arena as Surrey-native Thompson stoned the Eagles early and often while posting his second shutout of the season.

The Eagles did everything but score, as the dominated the proceedings, but could not find a solution for Thompson. In the last two periods of play, Surrey outshot Prince George 29-8, but were outscored 2-0 as the Spruce Kings headed north with two stolen points in the standings safely tucked away in the cargo bay of their bus.

The only goal allowed by Eagles' goalie Michael Santaguida was a seeing-eye special that somehow made it through a crowd of bodies in front of the net and into the goal early in the third period.

"We outshot them 41-18 and lost 1-0 - well, 2-0 with an empty netter," Erhart said. "He (Thompson) has two shutouts this year, one against us with 38 saves, and the other against us with 41 saves. He comes to play against us, that's for sure. He stopped three breakaways and we couldn't score on a five-on-three (power play). There was one backdoor chance we had where our guys were already raising their arms in the air and he slid across and the puck hit his helmet and then his shoulder and stayed out. It was one of those nights I guess."

Sunday's scoring drought was a sharp u-turn from the scene Friday night at the same rink where it seemed every shot was finding the back of the net at both ends of the ice.

The Eagles erupted for five second period goals against Powell River to take a seemingly commanding 5-2 lead. That feeling of pre-Christmas cheer quickly evaporated in the final frame as the Kings scored three goals on 10 shots to tie the game and force overtime. In the extra session, Kings goalie Jonah Imoo - another Surrey-native tending the pipes for a league rival - salvaged a point for Powell River by stopping 10 shots to preserve the tie.

"In fairness to both goalies, it was a 5-5 game but it probably should have been a 2-2 game," Erhart said. "There were probably a couple goals that both goalies want back.

That's the way it goes, but I kind of wish we had saved one or two of those bounces for Sunday's game. It would have made it a better weekend for us."

Demico Hannoun, Mason Blacklock, Stefan Burzan, Drew Best and Craig Wyszomirski each scored once for Surrey.

The Eagles are now idle until Dec. 28 when they host Chilliwack at South Surrey Arena.
