Hungry Sharks make short work of visitors from Seattle

Bayside Sharks went on a feeding frenzy Saturday, combining to beat Seattle 176-12 in a pair of rugby games at South Surrey Athletic Park.

Bayside thrashed Seattle 91-0 in tier two Okanagan Springs Division 1 action, a match that was preceded by an 85-12 beat down in division two play.

"It wasn't exactly a nailbiter," conceded Bayside coach Pat Kearney. "It was good that they brought two teams over the border and they took it pretty well. It was a beautiful day to play a home game and our offense clicked right away. Our defence played well too and we had a lot of possession as the score line reflects. It bumps up our stats at the beginning of the season but we'll take it."

Peter Clifford led the attack for the first division Sharks with one try and eight conversions.

Winger Jesse Train scored three tries while prop Peter Johnston and outside centre Isimeli Sugarua added two majors apiece.

The Sharks return to action Saturday against Velox in Victoria.

Beavers win big

Elsewhere, in tier three Province Division play, the Surrey Beavers chewed up the host Black Sheep 30-7 in Port Alberni Saturday.

The Beavers second division side also enjoyed the trip home to Surrey after shearing the Sheep 55-17.

"We went over there with two full teams and we kind of spanked them," said Beavers coach Kevin Taylor. "The last couple of times we travelled to Port Alberni we were a bit short on bodies so I'm sure we surprised them with our numbers.

"We dominated them pretty good and we probably should have scored some more. We have a pretty young team and we're still gelling at this point. The guys were really motivated to be playing a league game again and we showed a lot of intensity."

Outside centre Jamie Beaton, fullback Clay Ross and inside centre John Tietzman were among the first division try scorers for the Beavers.

The Beavers are back home this Saturday when they host Nanaimo at Sullivan Heights Park. The first division game begins at 2: 30 p.m.
