Konrad Piaseczny put two years of silvertinged disappointment behind him with a golden weekend at the B.C. High School Track and Field Championships in Burnaby.

The Grade 12 Holy Cross student settled for silver in the men's long jump as a Grade 10 in 2010 and again as a Grade 11 last year. In his last high school meet last weekend, Piaseczny put those frustrations in the rear view mirror with a dominant performance in the jumping pits.

Piaseczny sewed up the gold medal by posting consistent leaps over 6.60 metres and then closed out the competition with a flourish, nailing a jump of 6.80m in his final attempt.

2011 champion Nick Fyffe of Vancouver College finished second with a jump of 6.55m.

"It felt so awesome to win it because I've been wanting it for so long," Piaseczny said. "It was a big relief to win it because there were a couple of other really good jumpers there like Nick Fyffe and Ben Daly-Grafstein (St. George's, who finished fifth). I knew it would be a battle. I lost to Nick last year by a centimetre and that was just the worst. I've worked really hard and it was a big relief to finally take the gold medal; it was the best feeling ever."

Piaseczny will attend the University of Guelph next year where he will study nanoscience and compete in track.

Elsewhere at the provincial high school meet, Kwantlen Park's Cheyanne Tunti closed out her high school career the same way she started it - on the top of the winners' podium.

In her first provincial meet as a Grade 8 in 2008, Tunti shocked the field by winning gold in the senior girls' 400m final. Tunti spent the last four years trying to get back to the top step on the podium and finally repeated the feat when she won the 400m final in a time of 56.36 seconds.

Tunti won gold in 2010 with Kwantlen Park's 4x100m relay team, giving her a pace of one gold medal every second year she competed at the B.C.'s.

Earl Marriott's Kathryn van Ryswyk was a double winner at the B.C. meet, claiming gold in the senior girls' pole vault as well as the Cliff Sproule Memorial Award as the meet's top pole vaulter.

The Grade 11 student, who travels south to Bellingham twice a week to train in the event, claimed the gold with a winning leap of 3.10m.

"It was cool to get to stand on the top of the podium," she said. "I've been doing the pole vault for four years but I've only gotten serious about it in the last year. I knew I had a chance to win it but it all came down to how I was feeling on the day. I just wanted to get a good height and then go for a (personal best)."

One of the biggest surprises of the meet was the gold medal showing by Ben Ingvaldsen of Lord Tweedsmuir in the shot put.

Only in Grade 9, Ingvaldsen out-muscled rivals who were as much as three years older than him to take the gold with a toss of 14.93m. His next closest opponent finished almost half a metre behind at 14.50m.

"I knew going in that I could place well but I didn't expect to finish first," he said. "I was shocked to win it because Grade 12s can be a little intimidating. I guess I was just on that day."

Ingvaldsen's winning throw was a new personal best by 10 centimetres.

Surrey resident and Little Flower Academy student Asianna Covington blew away the field in the senior girls' hammer throw with a toss of 54.80m. Covington's nearest rival claimed silver with an effort that fell more than 10 metres shy of the gold medalwinning throw.

Covington also picked up a silver medal for the senior girls' shot put.

Semiahmoo's Meghan Palesch rounded out the list of Surrey's gold medal winners by taking honour for the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 14.93 seconds. Palesch also placed second in the 400m hurdles.
