Pegasus soars past Rovers

Defending provincial champion ICST Pegasus showed no signs of holiday rust when they bombed Rovers United 7-1 in Vancouver Metro Soccer League premier action at Newton Athletic Park last Friday.

The win allowed the Horsemen to remain one point ahead of West Van in the VMSL premier table with the two sides slated to clash Friday night in Newton (8: 30 p.m.).

"You're always a little leery about how you'll respond coming out of the break, but we responded very well," said Pegasus coach Rob Reed. "With nationals and everything, we've played a lot of soccer since September so it was good to get a solid two weeks off.

Some guys wanted to keep training but I told them we needed the break. So we had one practise and then we played and we shot the lights out."

Any concerns Reed had about his team were quickly dispelled when Pegasus raced to a 5-0 halftime lead on goals by Niko Marcina, Azad Palani, Reynold Stewart, Jag Gill and Chetan Jhooty.

The Rovers hit the scoresheet early in the second half only to have Gill seal their fate by setting up Javid Khan for the sixth Horseman goal before banging one home himself to close out the scoring.

Elsewhere, the Delta Hurricanes maintained their position in the middle of the 12-team standings with an emphatic 3-0 win over cellar-dwelling Westside in Vancouver Saturday night.

After a scoreless first half, Dave Chohan scored the only goal the Hurricanes would need in the 60th minute. Delta then iced the win with goals two minutes apart by Ryan Dhillon and Gary Badesha in the dying minutes of regulation time.

Delta returns home this Sunday to play Richmond at 2 p.m. at John Oliver Park.

The Surrey United Firefighters rounded out the first January weekend of soccer action by blanking host Columbus 3-0 Sunday.

The win allowed Surrey to pull into a third-place tie with Columbus in the premier standings.

Premier scoring leader Angus Burke started the New Year on the right foot when he netted what turned out to be the winning goal in the 20th minute of play. Ten minutes later, Jeff Clarke had little trouble converting a penalty kick to put Surrey up by a pair.

The Firemen then closed out the scoring in the second half when Vinnie Stewart volleyed home a long pass from defender Steve Kindel.

Surrey hosts the Metro Ford Wolves Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cloverdale Athletic Park.
